Coordinates

Written & Directed by Annick Sickinghe

The short film Coordinates was born during the sailing race director Annick Sickinghe undertook across the Atlantic Ocean, accompanied by 22 strangers. She embarks not only on a physical journey but also on a profound inner one. In the short film Coordinates, Sickinghe weaves these experiences into a poetic reflection on the sense of time, memories, vulnerability, and connection.

The immense vastness of the sea stands in sharp contrast to the intimate human interactions on board. Seasickness and the spartan life on the ship evoke memories of a turbulent childhood and a battle with cancer, yet they also bring unexpected moments of connection with strangers. At the same time, the journey offers an almost magical, timeless feeling where the boundaries between past, present, and future blur.

Coordinates questions the essence of "home." Can the feeling of home arise from shared emotions, even on a ship in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by strangers? The film implicitly asks how we relate to time, our place in the world, and the profound connections with others and ourselves. For everyone who sometimes feels like they’re living on a spaceship Earth, this film offers a relatable and moving journey inward.
